The following lists of links offer you a wealth of information on a broad variety of subjects. It is highly recommended that you educate yourselves as much as possible so that you can protect your interests. We encourage you to send us new links to worthy websites whenever you find them so that we can make this site more useful for everyone.

The Jones Act
  • 1-800-JonesAct
The best online resource for the Jones Act that I know of, provided by the Ogletree Abbott Law Firm of Houston, Tx. I can't personally vouch for their integrity or legal expertise, but they've done more than anyone else to put this very important information at your disposal free of charge. For this I applaud them.

Mariner's Advocacy Groups & Labor Union Reform
  • National Mariners Association
Capt. Richard Block and his crew have been fighting the good fight for all of us for years (as the Gulf Coast Mariners Association) by keeping pressure on the Coast Guard, unscrupulous vessel operators and the powerful owner associations like the American Waterways Operators and Offshore Marine Services Association. Now they've gone nation-wide! They're the best friends we limited-tonnage mariners have, so please consider joining so you can support their important activities in Washington, D.C. Come on, cough it up you cheap bastards!
  • Master of Towing Vessels Association
Open to any U.S. merchant mariner holding a license as Master, Mate or Pilot of Towing Vessels, no matter where you work. They seek to focus attention on the manning and qualification crisis threatening our safety and livelihoods. Check it out and please consider joining. This started on the West Coast and is as grassroots as it gets. Support your own!
  • The Association for Union Democracy
If your union has forgotten what democracy means and who it is they're supposed to be working for, and you want to know what you can do about it, then this is your site. A great how-to manual about how to go about fixing a broken union. Required reading for all Local 333 members who haven't been asleep for the last few years, as well as those that just woke up!
  • National Labor Relations Board
This agency is the government's referee for disputes, squabbles and fights between unions and management, unions and their discontented members, non-union workers who want to unionize and management-types that want to prevent it, and so on. Probably not a very fun job. Lots of good information here for those who want to form a union, get rid of a union, or who aren't quite sure what they want to do. Plus the entire text of the Labor Relations Act of 1935. Read it if you dare!

Licensing & Documentation
  • U.S. Coast Guard - Merchant Mariner Licensing & Documentation
Find out about sea-time and training requirements for U.S.C.G Licenses and Merchant Mariner Documents, as well as STCW '95 endorsements. You can also download all application forms here too, including the Physical Examination Report.
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential
The dreaded, needless and unwanted TWIC is here, and I'll bet you're just as excited about it as I am! Barring a last-minute save from the U.S. Senate, or a horrendous blunder by the Transportation Security Administration, this is a done deal. Read it and weep.
  • F.C.C. - Marine Radio Operators Permit
Information about the F.C.C. radio license that you need to operate a workboat or passenger vessel in domestic service.
  • F.C.C. - GMDSS Operators License
Information about the F.C.C. radio license you need to work on vessels equipped for the GMDSS radio service. Anyone who wants to be able to work internationally on larger vessels, like ATB's and OSV's, needs this license.
  • F.C.C. Universal Licensing System - Online License Renewal
If you are already an F.C.C. registered user (most of you are, whether you know it or not) then you can renew online. You'll need your FRN (FCC Registration Number) and your password before you start. It's fast, simple, and you can pay with a credit or debit card. This is one of the best-run government services I've ever experienced. There are even people who will talk you through the process over the phone if you're not computer-savvy. It's how ALL government should be run. Bravo, F.C.C.!!!
  • F.C.C. CORES Registration
Here's where you register with the FCC's Commission Registration System (CORES) to get your FRN (FCC Registration Number) and choose your password. You will also choose a security question, so that you can reset your password if you lose or forget it.
  • U.S. Passports
If you want to work internationally you'll need one of these. Here's the word, right from the U.S. State Department.
